Chokwe Mwana Pwo Mask D.R. of Congo


Very distinctive Chokwe wooden handcarved mask, with strong prominent features, an abundant headress of plant fibers, and traditional ethnic scarring. There is a very special cowrie shell headband sewn into the headress.

This mask honors the founding female ancestor, Pwo, the archetype of womanhood, an elderly woman who encourages fertility. Mwana Pwo, represents the young woman, one who has gone through initiation and is ready for marriage.

The Chokwe people are vigorous and courageous hunters and farmers. Their dynamic spirit is reflected in their art. This special mask is in great condition, is 18 inches long, 12 inches at its widest and 7 inches deep.
