Coin pearls are cultured pearls that are farmed in freshwater mussels in rivers lakes and streams. It is a process that starts with inserting a flat round shell into the mussel then periodically turning this shell so that the nacre can form in equal thickness on both sides. This process can take up to a year for a single pearl to form! Well worth the effort.
