Guro Handpainted Crocodile Mask from Ivory Coast

$260.00

The Guro masks are distinctively elegant, usually long and pointed, and considered the most colorful of African masks. As the Guro people are mostly farmers, their designs incorporate images tied to the land and agrarian practices. The masks are often zoomorphic using their most revered animals, which include the antelope, the hyena, the leopard, the elephant AND the crocodile.

The crocodile is regarded as the king of the marshes, guarding the water bodies found within the tribal territories. Masks like these are always worn during ceremonies mostly for harvest and honoring dignitaries. They are full of hidden messages and are believed to be links between the human and the spiritual world.

This special and brilliant mask is 22 inches long, 8 inches wide and 4 inches deep. It does have age damage on one foot. The price has been reduced from $285.00. Still a wonderful carving and so unique.
