Guro Wooden Handpainted Mask Ivory Coast

The Guro are known for having the most colorful masks in Africa, which are very popular with collectors. The Guro have survived many generations in western Ivory Coast mostly as farmers of cocoa, coffee and cotton. In recent times, some villagers have departed to search for diamonds that are prevalent along the west coast of Africa.

Village life is regulated by a council of elders and secret societies, and dominated by a belief in protective spirits. The Je society is responsible for social, political and judicial concerns of the tribe. Their masks represent their spiritual way of life and their reverence for the power of animals. The masks are used in ceremonies that honor their ancestors and represent their loyalty to the past. These rituals are a way to pass on tribal history and customs. The masks are also used in wedding ceremonies and funerals.

This powerful mask depicts a man guiding a bull. It has a golden hue accented by red and brown. It is in excellent condition and has a shiny patina. Overall length is 18 inches. Its widest area is 5.5 inches and it is 4 inches deep. Approximate age is around 30 years.
