Soapstone Handcarved Box from Agadez Niger


Deep brown fireburned soapstone box handmade by a Tuareg artisan, from Agadez, Niger. The Tuareg are a nomadic people living on the edge of the Sahara in a vast area that encompasses Algeria, Libya, Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso! They are considered part of the Berbers, an ethnicity of several nations indigenous to North Africa.

This singular box is a wonderful example of the Tuareg profound and enduring artistry. They are known for their distinctive jewelry, leathercraft, metal decorations in saddles and finely crafted swords. This round box has a 4.5 inch diameter and is 2.25 inches tall.
